A mentor–mentee program for youth and young adults

Every young person deserves someone who believes in them.

Madiba Leadership Alliance connects young people with caring adult mentors — from students finishing school to young adults building a career. So they can excel in school, work, and life, and contribute to the community that raised them.

Our purpose
“A mentor–mentee program created to help youth excel and better contribute to the community at large.” — Madiba Leadership Alliance, purpose of the Corporation (2023)

Named in honour of Nelson Mandela — “Madiba”, his clan name — our alliance exists to pass on what every young person needs but not every young person has: a stable, encouraging adult relationship that opens doors.

We are a federally incorporated not-for-profit (Corporation #1481535-1) building a community of volunteer mentors across professions — trades, tech, finance, healthcare, education — matched with youth who need guidance, confidence, and a route forward.

Why mutual selection? Great mentorships are relationships, not assignments. That’s why mentees and mentors both make their preferences known during registration — and Madiba brings them together when the interest is mutual.

Words we stand by
“
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
Nelson Mandela
“
What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.
Nelson Mandela
“
Young people are capable, when aroused, of bringing down the towers of oppression and raising the banners of freedom.
Nelson Mandela — Paris, 1990

Ways we walk with young people

Our flagship program

The Madiba Youth Leadership & Career Accelerator

A structured 12-month program that takes a young adult from “I don’t know where to start” to something concrete: a written plan, a mentor who shows up, real professional contacts, and a next step that belongs to them.

Who it’s for: young people aged 17–29 — finishing school, starting out, changing direction, or working toward a goal. If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian is involved.

12 monthsOne full cycle — from intake and baseline assessment through delivery to follow-up support.
1:1 mentoringEvery participant is matched with a screened, trained volunteer mentor.
12 workshopsPractical career-readiness modules. Every session produces something the participant keeps.
An individual career planWritten with the participant, reviewed through the year, and theirs to keep and change.
Pathway navigationHelp understanding what a chosen direction actually requires — programs, credentials, time, cost.
Follow-up afterSupport doesn’t stop at the last session. Progress is checked and participants can re-engage.

The participant journey

What every participant can expect

Program status: the Accelerator is in development as a pilot. Registration for the first cycle opens once funding and program dates are confirmed — join the interest list and we’ll let you know first.

Career-readiness workshops

Twelve modules, from career clarity to a 90-day plan

The workshop series is built for young people aged 17–29 and is modular — participants come in with different needs, so sessions combine core content with individual support. Each one ends with something tangible the participant keeps.

Inside the Accelerator

What actually happens, week to week

Six things hold the program together: a mentor, a plan, the workshops, help navigating the path, real professional exposure, and leadership development.

Mentorship — what a mentor actually does

Mentor boundaries: a Madiba mentor will never promise you a job, an immigration outcome, money or a professional service, and mentoring is not a substitute for qualified legal, medical or financial advice. If something isn’t right, you can raise it with us directly — and ask for a different match.

Career pathways we help you navigate

EmploymentWhat roles actually fit, what experience they require, and how to get in the door.
Post-secondaryWhich programs and credentials lead where — and what they cost, in time and money.
Skilled tradesApprenticeship routes: how to start, who to contact, and what the path looks like.
TechnologyFoundational skills and certifications worth having, and which ones are not.
Health careEducation, regulatory and role requirements for the direction you’re considering.
EntrepreneurshipWhether it’s the right path for you right now — and what it genuinely takes.

Your career plan

Every participant has an Individual Career Plan — written with you, not about you. It converts an ambition into steps somebody can actually take, and it’s yours to keep and to change.

Your plan is reviewed with you after intake, during the program, before you exit, and in follow-up — so it stays a working document rather than something filed and forgotten.

How we run it

Standards we hold ourselves to

These are the commitments that sit under everything above — and the things we will not claim.

Accessible & inclusiveWe ask about accessibility needs at intake and plan around them: accessible venues on transit, a virtual option where it works, plain-language materials, and accommodations within our resources.
LanguageProgramming is delivered in English. Where French-language support is needed, we engage qualified French-speaking facilitators and make key materials available in French.
SafeguardingEvery mentor is screened and trained, with a code of conduct, clear boundaries and an escalation route. Madiba is not a crisis service — where a need is beyond us, we connect you to qualified support.
Privacy & consentWe collect the minimum we need, explain why, store it securely, limit who can see it, and respect your right to withdraw consent at any time.
Referrals, not overreachWe don’t try to be everything. Where a need sits outside our scope — housing, mental health, legal or financial advice — we refer you to qualified services and follow up.
Honest measurementWe track participation, progress against your plan, skills, mentorship and pathway steps — and we report what actually happened, not what would look best.

What we don’t claim: we don’t guarantee a job, an admission, a credential, funding or any other specific outcome. Nobody can honestly promise those. What we commit to is a plan, a mentor, practical skills, real introductions and support that keeps going — and we’ll report our outcomes honestly, including when we miss.

How it works

Matching that starts with mutual choice

We don’t assign matches. Both sides choose — and Madiba confirms when the interest is mutual.

Register & choose your side

Join as a young person or young adult seeking a mentor or as a volunteer mentor. If you’re 18 or over you register on your own — under-18s register with a parent or guardian.

Share what you’re looking for

Interests, goals, availability, and the kind of person you’d connect with best — captured right in registration.

Browse & select each other

Youth view mentor profiles and select who they’d like; mentors do the same. When both select each other, it’s a mutual match.

Meet, grow, and stay connected

Madiba facilitates the first introduction, provides training and check-ins, and supports the pair through every stage.

Step 1 — Who are you?

Pick the side that describes you. Anyone 18 or over registers on their own; under-18s register with a parent or guardian.
